How We Help

Civil legal help, at no cost to those who qualify

ULS handles civil (non-criminal) matters for eligible low-income Utahns. These are the areas we work in every day.

Housing & Eviction

Eviction notices and defense, housing debt, unsafe housing conditions, and clearing an eviction from your record.

Public Benefits

Social Security, disability, SNAP, utility assistance, and help paying Medicaid/Medicare deductibles — enrollment and appeals.

Family & Domestic

Domestic legal issues, protection for survivors of domestic violence, and family law matters — 2,186 DV-related cases in 2025.

Consumer & Scams

Debt collection, identity theft, and fraud — including phone, text, and online scams that increasingly target older adults.

Wills & Seniors

Simple wills, estate planning advice, medical directives, and powers of attorney — with a monthly legal advice clinic for seniors.

Name Changes & More

Name change petitions and gender marker changes, veterans' civil legal issues, and help navigating the courts on your own.

ULS runs recurring free clinics across Utah, in person and via Zoom. Walk-ins are welcome; priority goes to those who sign up in advance.

Free help enrolling for public benefits or appealing a denial: Social Security, disability, SNAP, utility assistance, and state help paying Medicaid/Medicare deductibles.

A nonprofit law firm, committed to equal justice since 1976

Utah Legal Services is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal advice and representation to Utahns who fall under income eligibility guidelines. For 50 years we have helped people protect their homes, their families, their income, and their safety.

We're funded by the Legal Services Corporation along with other funding partners, and we work through community clinics, outreach events, and our statewide offices. When we can't directly represent you, we make sure you still get help — including referrals to attorneys and legal partners.
